Tracking Fred: Tropical Storm Warning Issued for the Florida Keys Flooding concerns arise as a result of the wet weekend.
MIAMI – A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for the Florida Keys as Tropical Depression Fred soaks Cuba and shows signs of strengthening.
Forecasters predict heavy rain in other parts of Florida.
A disorganized Fred was 315 miles east-southeast of Key West at 8 a.m. Friday, moving west-northwest at 10 mph.
It had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, but the National Hurricane Center says those winds could increase and the system become a tropical storm again Friday (which requires winds of 39 mph or higher).
While Broward and most of Miami-Dade counties are not under a tropical storm watch, rain is expected on Friday night and Saturday, and those counties are under a flood watch.
[NORCROSS ANALYSIS: Fred is barely hanging on, but will still bring heavy rain and strong winds to South Florida]
“The center of the system will stay west of Miami-Dade and Broward, but the impacts will be felt well beyond this projected path,” said Julie Durda of Local 10 meteorology. “We are expecting heavy rain and gusty winds in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, with flooding being the main concern.”
The Florida Keys remain in the path of Fred, which is expected to hit them Saturday afternoon or evening.
“On the forecast track,” Fred is expected to move along or just north of eastern and central Cuba through tonight, near the Florida Keys on Saturday, and near the west coast of Florida on Sunday, according to the Hurricane Center.
“From today to Monday, 3 to 7 inches of rain are expected across the Keys, southern and central Florida, and north to the Big Bend, with isolated maximum totals of 10 inches.” Heavy rains could cause areal, urban, and small stream flooding, as well as exacerbate existing minor to isolated moderate river flooding in northern Florida.”
